How You Can Help Teens
Teens need you. They need adults to acknowledge them; they need adults to care about their lives; they need adults to listen. You can make a difference, just by being there.
Research shows that caring adults can cut teen drug use, improve school attendance and improve family relationships. You can be one of those caring adults.
Anchorage has a number of youth-serving agencies that are always looking for help. Be a Big Brother or Big Sister, help a child get their GED or coach a youth sports team. If nothing else, be sure to say hi to the kid next door as he walks to the bus or helps you carry your groceries to the car, and say “good job” the next time you see a young person doing well. Encouragement works a lot better than discipline.
